breastcancer.org has info, support + swirly bracelets to show you care + fund research programs. i was just diagnosed 2 days ago + told to decide whether i want mastectomy right away or try chemotherapy for 2 months to see if it will shrink the very large tumor enough to have the option of lumpectomy, so i can keep my nipple + some of my breast tissue + most of the skin. the doctor gave me a folder with flyers for breast cancer support meetings where i could learn more about breast cancer + maybe talk to people who'd had both of those procedures. the next night (last night) i attended a community breast health project meeting in palo alto, ca. they have a research library with a very helpful librarian. they also have a helpline + a "buddy" program to help you learn about + get through your treatment. this week i did a blood test, lung xray + catscan too. i get the test results + "stage" of disease next monday morning with a surgeon + an oncologist (cancer doctor who gives chemotherapy in 6 week cycles, 5 days per week for 4-12 months). they'll tell me what my options are based on the "stage" of the progression of the disease. then i'll take all my test results + get a 2nd opinion with another surgeon in the afternoon. i'll probably have a 2nd opinion with another oncologist asap. i would be very fortunate to have an opinion made at stanford's "tumor board" where my results would be looked at by several specialists. i have to move very quickly on my decision if i have surgical options (if i'm not at the end stage). i don't find out til monday + i am in a cold sweat + ill, so it's hard to be optimistic, but i'm trying because i have the most wonderful daughter in the world + she's only 2 1/2 + i want to be there for her +her children. by ~mod*mom~ at 27.1.06 © 2 comments
this cow milk ad trying to make it seem the baby prefers cow milk over mommy milk is just another example of advertisers trying to shape public opinion away from mother's milk + breastfeeding. this is a sore topic for me. i was even told by a lactation nutritionist that i should drink lots of cow milk while i was pregnant + nursing, which is a crock + caused my mod*tot needless months of colic, until i found out that mother's drinking cow milk is the #1 cause of colic (yogurt + cheese are okay). babies evolved to drink human mother's milk, not cow mother's milk. cowmilk processing doesn't remove the hormones that are meant for a calf's rapid growth + maturation. infants drinking cow milk is a major contributor to developing diabetes. soy milk is pretty scarey too. soy based infant formula is banned in canada + england, but so profitable here in the u.s. that the advertising has reached more health conscious mother's looking for a cow milk alternative, than the truth about the danger's of hormone imbalance in developing infants who drink soy based infant formula. breast is best. eat at mom's. by ~mod*mom~ at 22.1.06 © 8 comments

happy hollow park + zoo was built in the 1960's in san jose, california + it still has most of the groovy playground toys + amusements. mod*tot has a membership so we go there frequently. we park at the san jose ice center a few blocks away + watch the skaters. her mod*grandpop is the us speedskating national champion for masters. i took these pictures last friday the 13th. it was a beautiful day. mod*tot is freaked out by clowns, because of that clown machine. she calls it the "scarey jack in the box". she first saw it about 6 months ago + she refers to it several times every day. every clown or box is a scarey jack in the box to her. poor baby. first i thought maybe it was her subconscious fear of new surprises, because we moved to a new place. all day she says "I want to go home" + i tell her this is home + show her that we brought all of our stuff + we'll paint the walls pretty colors like our apartment (we're still working on our remodeling). poor baby. we visit piedmont avenue, the oakland zoo + ikea emeryville + berkeley every so often, so we can see all the stuff + people + parks +pizza pazza that we miss. by ~mod*mom~ at 16.1.06 ©

did you ever see this nest highchair? they have it at moderntots it looks cute + the base height adjusts to a chair, but i don't think it has enough back support. mod*tot uses an older version of the $18 white polypropolene highchair from IKEA + it looks very mod. she also has their spinning egg chair in white with a lime green base for $59, which is a good investment, because she'll use it for years + she absolutely loves to spin in it + sit + read. by ~mod*mom~ at 16.1.06 ©
