san francisco, california, is going to encourage people to convert dog poop into an energy source. (by paul sakuma, a.p., via washington post) in the next few months, san francisco will start a program at a popular dog park that will encourage people to drop their dog droppings into a methane digester, a contraption in which bacteria eat at doggie doo for weeks until the poop becomes methane gas. the gas could then be used to power gas stoves + heaters. it also could be used to generate electricity. how much energy could be generated by fido's feces? well, city officials say that almost 4% of household trash is dog waste. that's about 6,500 tons a year. san francisco, named after saint francis of assisi, the patron saint of animals, is home to about 120,000 dogs." by ~mod*mom~ at 28.2.06 ©

sheer makes a spherical futuristic kitchen that comes apart. the top half raises for venting + light, the lower half has your food preparation area + sink. you work around the "kitchen" instead of having the "kitchen" stuff around you. i don't know why there's no table + chairs in there though. the chaise lounge looks out of place. oh, i think i see folding chairs in the cupboard. maybe the table is hidden away too. by ~mod*mom~ at 21.2.06 © 0 comments

pure contemporary's interactive room planner + home decor organizer interior design software tools for remodeling & home planning are fun, functional + free. i enjoyed using the room planner software to plan the remodel of our kitchen with ikea cabinets, gas stove + separate gas cooktop. i had my kitchen professionally measured by an ikea rep + she was soooo happy i turned her on to this software, because it's way better than ikea's. it even has a selection of modern furniture along with appliances + you can accurately size windows + doors in the room. by ~mod*mom~ at 19.2.06 © 0 comments

design observer had this interesting article: method was begun in 1999 by a chemical engineer and a graphic designer, with an aim to create totally biodegradable, environmentally sound cleaning products. with packaging designed by karim rashid since 2002, the complete line now includes laundry, specialty surface, dish, hand and body wash as well as all-purpose cleaners. here in the us, method products are available at target, as well as gracious home, gourmet garage and most recently, wal-mart. the surface cleaner shown here retails for about $4 for a 28 ounce bottle. the bottle on the right also has a circular logo, consisting of the first letter of the brand name (in this case, s) and uses lowercase, sans serif type, an abstract, duotoned photograph, a horizontal label with rounded edges and a narrrow white border, and a fresh, mint scent. the bottle shape is similar too, albeit slightly larger, holding 30 ounces of liquid. both products are biodegradable. this product sells for one dollar and is available at select discount stores and pharmacies." by ~mod*mom~ at 17.2.06 © 0 comments

plasma car can be ridden by moms, dads or tots. it handles up to 220 lbs. just swivel the steering wheel to propel yourself on a smooth surface inside or outside. click on the plasma car to watch people riding them. i've tried one at a big toy store + they're pretty comfortable + i saw a man from the store ride one. it's pretty durable too. i wish they came in silver so they would look more jetson-like. they have an interesting little movie on the discovery channel about the physics behind the plasma car (from canada). by ~mod*mom~ at 16.2.06 © 0 comments
