mod*tot LOVES strawberries + we are growing edible native strawberries. the california strawberry commission sent me some strawberry news, facts + links to share with mod*mom readers + their children this summer. California provides 88% of the nation's strawberries, + the region is experiencing an incredibly bountiful harvest this year. With over 35,000 acres of fields across California, the growers will be picking nearly 6 million crates of delicious, ripe strawberries this week. California harvests over a billion lbs of strawberries annually. 1 acre of land grows about 50,000 lbs of strawberries. strawberries fight cancer, aid memory, lower blood pressure, help reduce the risk of heart disease, contain powerful antioxidants + rank 2nd among fruits in antioxidant capacity: 1 serving of strawberries contains more Vitamin C than an orange! strawberry recipes are here + here strawberryville has interactive games + activities the monterey bay strawberry festival is august 1,2,3 did you know strawberries aren't actually berries (although a tomato is)? I, like most Swedes, like especially what in Swedish are called Smultron (Fragaria vesca, commonly known as Woodland Strawberry). Ingmar Bergman's movie which is called "Wild Strawberries" in English is originally named Smultronstället = the smultron spot(place). An expression which refers to a really good place which is known only to you or at to least not too many. A great coffee shop, a special store, a relaxing spot in the outdoors etc. By Martin Klasch, at 7/02/2008 2:38 PM

I like that reason for the name too. However I don't know which is right though. We call it "Jordgubbar". Today that would mean Earth Men (old). Which is pretty funny. However, "gubbar" is an old word for lumps. Not as funny. Why people began calling old men lumps I sure don't know.
