easter eggs : : selecting healthy eggs + making natural egg dyes there are so many choices of types of eggs + i've been wondering about the meanings of descriptions on egg carton labels. other people in the egg section are usually just as confused. i asked robert, the dairy buyer at whole foods, to explain some of the descriptions, but he wasn't sure of the meanings either, so he did some research + here are his answers: q."what's the difference between cage free + free range?" a. "nothing. all the chickens are free to go in + out of unlocked coops." q."what's the difference between veg fed + organic? do some eat meat?" a."they're all fed vegetarian feed."organic" means their feed is organic." q."when it says dha + omega 3, how are they added to the egg?" a."it's in the chicken feed." whole foods has natural egg dye recipes here. illustration by ingela peterson arrhenius via print+pattern this post is recycled from last easter. do you have any egg tips or recipes? by ~mod*mom~ at 20.3.08 © 7 Comments:Good to know! You can also die easter eggs the Russian way...biol them with red onion leaves. They turn a beautiful red hue. That is our project this year. :) "free range" means that they have access to open air for an undetermined amount of time per day. They may still be cramped together in unhealthy and miserable cages. It does NOT mean that they can come and go as they please. This may be the case, but rarely is so. Happy Friday! What a wonderfully quirky site. I love it! My favorite set is the "Sub Adventure!" I think it would be fun for a child to imagine they were under the ocean in a submarine! Please enter me in your drawing. Thanks,Cindi By windycindy, at 3/21/2008 4:58 PM Hi thinks for stopping by my site...I LOVE the retro!! It's groovy. I'm planning to dye the eggs tomorrow but I know if you put a few tsp.s of veggie oil in the cooled water it gives them a marbled effect! :) Happy Egg Dyeing...and Easter!!! |
